One great day, two very different parades St Patrick's Day 2018
St Patrick's Day is a global event enjoyed by millions across the globe. But even just within Ireland itself, the ways people mark the Irish national holiday can differ enormously.
On this page, see how rural communities in Co. Kerry bring together an ecclectic celebration of country life. Then compare this with the metropolitan buzz of a St Patrick's Day parade in Cork City, held on the very same day.
Sneem, Co. Kerry
For such a small country community, Sneem had a very outward-looking and international flavour. Part of the march was dedicated to the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Dog, and so a local Labrador was called upon to don its finest Chinese garb.
The Sneem St. Patrick's Day parade is also a chance for local farmers to trade in live stock and for parade goers to purchase some live chickens, should the mood take them. Children, in particular, love getting their picture taken next to a goat or pony and the market really adds a great element to the whole day.

Cork City
The Cork City parade's theme was the 100th anniversary of Irish Women receiving the right to vote. Again, there was an international flavour to proceedings with Mexico, the United States, China and Brazil being just some of the countries involved in the parade this year.
The crowd in Cork City was also brilliantly diverse and it was great to see everyone coming together to enjoy what was a great spectacle.
